Maternity pay calculator (UK): salary → monthly maternity pay

Most people don’t know their Average Weekly Earnings (AWE). So this calculator starts with the thing you do know: your annual salary — then estimates your maternity pay per week and month.

This is a planning tool (it won’t replace your payroll calculation). If your earnings vary (overtime/commission), use the Advanced AWE option.

We estimate AWE as annual salary ÷ 52. If your pay varies, use the AWE toggle below.

SMP can be paid for up to 39 weeks.

Common questions

How is maternity pay calculated in the UK?

Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is typically: the first 6 weeks at 90% of your AWE, then the standard weekly rate (or 90% of AWE if lower) for up to 39 weeks total.

Why does this use annual salary instead of AWE?

Most people don’t know AWE. Using salary makes it easy to get a useful estimate. If your pay varies, switch on “Use AWE” and enter the exact number from payroll.

Can this include enhanced maternity pay?

Yes — enter the number of weeks your employer pays full or half pay. After that, the calculator applies SMP up to the total weeks selected.

How does this help with Universal Credit?

Maternity pay changes your monthly income. Use the estimated monthly figure here as a starting point, then test scenarios in the Universal Credit calculator.
