LHA & the UC housing element

LHA (Local Housing Allowance) is often the cap used for private renting. If your rent is higher than your LHA rate, UC may only include housing up to the cap — leaving you to cover the gap.

What LHA is

It’s a location-based maximum for housing support (often used in private renting). Your household and bedroom entitlement affects which LHA rate applies.

Why it matters

If your rent is above LHA, you may always have a shortfall. That shortfall is a real cost that can make extra work look pointless even when earnings rise.

How to model it on this site

In the UC calculator, enter your eligible rent and optionally enter an LHA cap. The calculator uses min(rent, LHA) for the housing element estimate.

Next step: is it worth working?

Once you know your UC number (with housing), use the work vs benefits calculator to see the real monthly difference.
